She is the daughter of Ron Slate, a poet and author and Nancy Slate, a ceramist. She is the second of three children. She has an older sister named Abigail and a younger sister named Stacey. She was raised in a Jewish family. She is an American by nationality and is of Ashkenazi Jewish ethnicity.
